The Psychology of Motivation: How to Help Your Students & Yourself Get and Stay Inspired
Getting your students to learn effectively is largely a factor of motivation, but knowing what tools and techniques are actually going to work to inspire your students to learn is much more challenging. Each of your students is unique, so there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach. By understanding the brain-based psychology behind student motivation and the different types of motivation, you can start to bring balance into your classroom, whether you’re teaching virtually or in-person.
All learners will receive a certificate for 10 professional development hours upon completion of a PowerPD unit
This course is recommended for classroom teachers and special education teachers, particularly those who work with students in grades K-12. In a world with increasing distractions, sources of stress, and information to process, the brain needs a way to manage and organize incoming information. Executive Functioning is a set of skills that enables us to manage multiple sources of information, develop plans, and stay focused. We are not born with this innate ability but develop it as we grow and learn. Without these crucial skills, your students cannot accomplish several crucial tasks including: controlling impulses, complex problem solving, developing and adjusting plans, recognizing and remediating mistakes, setting, monitoring, and achieving goals, emotional self-regulation and control.
As an educator, we know you love to learn [the theory behind executive functioning and why it is important for your students] - but we also know that you need to apply these skills in your classroom tomorrow. In this course, we will provide you with the information you need to actually understand the brain science behind Executive Functioning, as well as practical strategies to identify Executive Functioning weaknesses through your students' behaviors, and how to support strengthening them.
In this course, you will gain a better understanding of motivation for your students and yourself, learn about the relationship between neurodiversity and motivation, and gain strategies and tools to use to motivate your students in the classroom and remotely.
Learners who successfully complete this PowerPD should be able to:
- List the two main types of motivation.
- Identify how different behaviors and drivers align on the motivation spectrum.
- Identify the seven different learning styles and have an understanding of how they can impact motivation.
- Clearly understand and reflect upon their own motivations for teaching.
- Use four unique classroom strategies to empower students with different learning styles and motivation types.
- Communicate effectively with parents or guardians about how they can support motivation techniques outside of classroom time.
